Digital infrared imaging scans show the function, the physiology and the metabolism of breast tissue. It gives a picture of the functional activity in breast tissue.
Usually abnormal cells are hotter because a malignant tissue mass is greedy. To feed their rapid growth they produce a chemical that makes new blood vessels grow. This is called angiogenesis (angio means blood vessel, genesis means creation).
A digital infrared imaging scan shows the heat difference between normal breast tissue and problem areas. In scientific terms, the normal breast tissue acts as the control against which any hot areas are compared.
Not all malignancies are hypervascular; that is, a small number do not show increased blood supply. Unless there are other signs, a thermography scan will not detect a non-hypervascular malignancy.
A digital infrared imaging scan provides the earliest evidence of breast disease. The sensitivity rate is 90%. This means in 90% of cases, the scan accurately indicates a presence or absence of disease. Digital infrared imaging has a 10% false positive rate; in 10% of cases the results may suggest disease where there is none.
Problems can be found before abnormalities are seen with mammograms. Early detection provides the best outcome.
Examines the whole chest, breasts and armpit areas. Good for all ages: puberty, pregnant, breast-feeding, pre-menopausal years and post-menopausal years. Good for all breast types: dense, fibrocystic, enhanced and women on oral hormone medication (BCP & HRT).
Locates exact problem areas allowing for more precise focus with other medical diagnostic tests; ultrasound, mammogram, MRI.
No squeezing, no pressure, no touching by equipment or technician.
No harmful rays emitted so digital infrared imaging scan can be done as often as needed to monitor breast health and to guide treatment.
Medical Thermography International Inc. was established in 2001 as a mobile clinic committed to making infrared breast thermography scanning available in communities across Canada. We partner with alternative health care practitioners at their locations to deliver this service in their community. We maintain an ongoing relationship with the health care practitioner that includes consultative services as well as providing continuing education in Proactive Breast Health.
Medical Thermography International is a corporate member of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (www.oand.org) and a member of the American Academy of Thermology (www.americanacademyofthermology.org). Our technicians are certified by the American Academy of Thermology.
Medical Thermography International is dedicated to supporting women in their quest for breast health care by providing proactive health services and practical knowledge that enables health management by the individual.
All digital infrared images are interpreted and reported by Dr. Philip Hoekstra III. Dr. Hoekstra is a medical physiologist specializing in the early detection of breast cancer by diagnostic infrared imaging. He is the President of the American Academy of Thermology, Regent of the American College of Oncologic Thermology and a Director of the American Board of Thermology. Dr. Hoekstra is the Chief Science Officer and Laboratory Director of Therma-Scan (www.thermascan.com). Dr. Hoekstra has the experience of more than 750,000 patient studies over the past thirty-seven years, is world-renown for his accomplishments in diagnostic infrared imaging for breast cancer and as the developer of a comprehensive analytic system for diagnostic breast thermology.
